The return and revamp of the beloved Monkey Island series has been welcomed warmly by fans and new players alike. Telltale has done a remarkable job in continuing the adventures of quick-thinking pirate Guybrush Threepwood and his spunky wife, Elaine. At this month’s PAX, I spoke briefly with Design Director David Grossman on what to expect in the next three episodes of Tales of Monkey Island. Naturally he couldn’t go into too much detail, but it was fun to get a tiny sneak peek at what’s in store.
This month’s episode The Siege of Spinner Cay put some of the characters in unlikely situations. The burly pirate LeChuck has returned to human form and seems to have dropped his evil ways. Guybrush doesn’t trust the new LeChuck at all, while Elaine welcomes this change with open arms. In fact, she seems to be spending a bit too much time with him, much to her husband’s chagrin.
Grossman confirmed that the next episode will indeed further delve into this entangled relationship of sorts between Guybrush, Elaine, and LeChuck, and perhaps even the connection between Guybrush and the sultry mercenary Morgan LeFay. These sound like tantalizing storylines, but I hope it doesn’t turn into a soap opera. He didn’t mention details regarding the last two episodes, but did say that the final episode will be a culmination of events from the other four and that it’ll end with a bang.
Grossman also mentioned that the puzzles in the upcoming episodes will be more universally appealing, as they apparently had trouble with one in particular from The Siege of Spinner Cay.
“The red herring puzzles were not translatable,” he said, explaining that players from other countries and cultures did not understand what a red herring was.
The third episode of Tales of Monkey Island, titled Lair of the Leviathan, is scheduled for release next month.
