CDV’s physics puzzle game for the DS I Heart Geeks was featured at this weekend’s Penny Arcade Expo. I had the opportunity to check out the game early last year at a CDV press event and was curious to see what has changed since. The answer is: not much except for the artwork, which is by edgy urban fashion designer Marc Ecko.
The storyline is very simple and takes a backseat to the puzzles themselves. You play a geek who needs to outsmart a bunch of brawny jocks through the use of physics puzzles. There are 100 puzzles, each more complex than the last. Eventually you’ll start seeing Rube Goldbergian puzzles that will leave you scratching your head in confusion. While early puzzles have straightforward solutions, the more advanced ones have multiple possibilities of solving them.
In the demo I had to get a toy fire truck across the screen, but there is a large gap in the path. I had two items available — a balloon and a small yellow brick. I placed the brick in the gap and tied the balloon to it, which lifted the brick enough for the truck to be able to cross to the other side. Although I was able to use both items to solve the puzzle, at later stages you may not need all items available to you.
There is an online multiplayer feature, but limited in that you can challenge a friend using the DS’s local wifi signals.
I Heart Geeks looks like a really fun game, bound to keep puzzle lovers busy and entertained. Here are some more screenshots.
