Montreal developer Ubisoft electrified a crowd of 5,000 on Friday night with its back-to-back presentations of Splinter Cell: Conviction and Assassin’s Creed II. The Sam Fisher game was first, with Creative Director Max Beland giving the presentation. He stressed that this Splinter Cell will change the way people play stealth-based games. It’s no secret the iPhone has solidified itself as being a legitimate gaming platform. Once a place where independent developers could show off their work, the App store has gotten the attention of big developers and publishers such as EA and id who release smaller games at an affordable cost. So what about mobile gaming on other smartphone OS’s? The Android Platform is barely out of its infancy in the United States, but more and more carriers are set to release phones with the Android operating system built in. It’s only a matter of time before Android moves to new heights in a way similar to what the iPhone has done.
I decided to start this column to show three of the best games that are currently available on the Android Market and to showcase some upcoming projects. If you own a Android enabled phone, check back here each week for updates on the latest worth playing games for your handset.
Abduction! World Attack
Developer: Phil Symonds
Price: $2.00
Abduction! World Attack is a nifty little game that takes advantage of the accelerometer inside your phone. The game features a cow (and other unlockable animals) who must bounce around on platforms to reach a spaceship at the top of each level. You tilt your phone to determine the speed and how far the animals will move across the screen. There are also special items on each level that can either help or hinder your progress. One item gives you a super jump while another makes every platform you touch crumble. It’s a super simple concept but it will challenge you immensely. There’s a free demo also available to download that includes a time attack mode and a few maps from adventure mode.
Bonsai Blast
Developer: glu mobile
Price: Free
Bonsai Blast is a free puzzle game that follows the tried and true color matching mechanic. The object of each level is to match three or more colors on a long string of multicolored balls before it reaches a hole. You are given a colored ball randomly and all you have to do is tap where on the screen you want to ball to go. Sometimes you have to take into account obstructions in the environment in order to get your ball to where you want it to go. There even some power ups such as fire balls that destroy whatever ball you toss it at.
Project Chronos
I’ve searched around but cannot find too much about this game other than a Youtube video that proves it exists. These Polish developers are looking to make a FPS with 3D graphics on the Android platform. As you can see from the video it’s being played on a G1. The game looks very promising even though I imagine it’s still being worked on due to the slow movement on screen. I’ll defiantly keep my ears to the ground regarding this title.
