July 17, 2009 11:20 am by Jeremy Hill When Guitar Hero: World Tour released, it contained a feature that allowed users to create their own songs and upload them to GH servers so other users could download and play their creations. This tool was unique but flawed due its confusing interface and unprofessional sound quality. Harmonix, the makers of Rock Band has taken this idea to a whole new level by introducing the Rock Band Network that lets anyone submit songs that could end up in the game.
Billboard reports Rock Band Network is in its beta phase currently but will move into open beta in August. Afterwards a full release is expected before the end of 2009. The Xbox 360 will be the first console to test out the new section of the existing Rock Band store before it’s opened up to PS3 and Wii platforms.
The process works by having artists submit songs to freelance Harmonix game developers who will make sure the song doesn’t violate any copyright laws, is playable and doesn’t contain vulgar lyrics. If a song is approved it is put into a special section of the Rock Band store along with a 30 second demo. The songs will cost between $.50 and $3.00 and the artist will receive 30% of all song sales.
