July 20, 2009 3:09 pm by Toni Schwartz Although Safecracker debuted on the PC in 2006, it looked like one of those old school-style puzzle games, because you navigated around a seemingly three dimensional world that’s actually composed of static two dimensional images put together. Nevertheless, the graphics are beautiful and reminiscent of Myst, and the puzzles themselves ranged from mildly challenging to bang-your-head-on-the-wall tough. It’s a fun way to spend a few hours….or days.
I had a blast playing through Safecracker on the PC, though I admittedly had to *ahem* look up the answers a few times on the later puzzles. When it was released on the Wii I was less than enthused. Although the puzzles and solutions were exactly the same, it was much more frustrating to use the Wiimote than it is to point and click with a mouse. Also, there was an unbelievable number of very slow load times.
Safecracker developers the Adventure Company announced that they’re porting the game to the DS. I’m not sure if they’ll have all of the exact same puzzles with the same solutions, but so far it seems that they’ll have the same number — 35. As disappointed I was with the Wii version, I feel that the upcoming Safecracker DS version may be different. A stylus acts very similar to a mouse in that you can tap on the touchscreen, as opposed to a Wiimote in which you’re waving it around in the air with little control over it. The screenshot suggests that the graphics may be similar, though I wonder about load times.
There’s no exact release date yet for Safecracker DS, though it should drop roughly at the end of the year.
