Montreal developer Ubisoft electrified a crowd of 5,000 on Friday night with its back-to-back presentations of Splinter Cell: Conviction and Assassin’s Creed II. Once upon a time, before Will Smith was an actor, he was the rapping half of a Grammy Award-winning duo called DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Will went on to battle aliens, become a Bad Boy, and a legendary boxer. Meanwhile his partner Jeffrey Townes, AKA DJ Jazzy Jeff, continued to make music, scratching and spinning happily.
One day Activision contacted Jeffrey and invited him to participate in some new music game called DJ Hero, which focuses on — you guessed it — being a DJ. In fact, you can be a playable character, they told Jeffrey. And he agreed.
I am very, very excited DJ culture is finally getting its due. To have a song in DJ Hero is a dream come true; to be a character someone can pick up the controller and select you and play is probably the biggest thing to happen to me in my career.
DJ Jazzy Jeff’s playable character in DJ Hero will be joining DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip, DJ AM, and Grandmaster Flash. The game will feature two exclusive mixes by DJ Jazzy Jeff: Tears for Fears’ “Shout” vs. Eric B. & Rakim’s “Eric B. Is President”, and LL Cool J “Rock the Bells” vs. The Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra “Bittersweet Symphony.”
Incidentally, DJ Jazzy Jeff did dabble a bit in acting, making a few appearances in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, playing Will’s wacky and annoying friend Jazz. A recurring joke was that he would get thrown out of the house. Here’s a great kick-out montage.
