The PSP has seen quite the resurgence lately! Just today, Rockstar games announced that the critically Chinatown Wars would be making a move to the PSP, and if you add that to the stellar lineup of upcoming games and the upcoming release of the PSP Go, then you have yourself quite the future for Sony’s little handheld. As such, it just seemed appropriate to give the PSP a bit of attention this week and maybe show off one of the better, affordable titles on the system.

So, for the unacquainted, let me introduce to you Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. Now, I am aware that by this point in the game most of the people playing Castlevania games are probably already fans of the series. That said, Dracula X is still easily one of the best values on the PSP, offering up more than two full games of great content for what you’d usually pay for one.

Featured in the game is a graphical update of Rondo of Blood which receives it’s American debut in Dracula X. In addition, the game also includes an unlockable edition of the PS1 classic Symphony of the Night and the original Rondo of Blood. All of the games are a substantial value. Symphony of the Night especially will last the average gamer awhile, what with it’s nonlinear Metroidvania style gameplay. That said, the remake of Rondo of Blood is also quite the bargain, loaded with alternative levels, bosses and hidden play modes.

Honestly, there isn’t much one can say about this title that is negative. The graphical enhancements to Rondo of Blood are quite impressive, giving it a true 3D look while still maintaining the 2D platforming style of the original game. Symphony of the Night as a 2D game is still quite attractive as is the original Rondo of Blood. The difficulty of all the games could be considered a problem, but only if you’re one of those gamers that thinks recharging health is a gaming necessity. In other words, wusses beware. If you can appreciate a healthy challenge though, pick up this game as it is sincerely great and will give you well more than many current gen games do for what you pay.
